Heavenly features Lake Tahoe's highest elevation of 10,067, longest vertical drop and the largest snowmaking system on the West Coast. Featuring approximately 4,800 skiable acres of two States, nine gondolas/high speed lifts with a total of 30 lifts. There are 36 ski trails, 4.0 km of cross-country trails with the longest run being 5.5 miles. 20% is beginner, 45% intermediate and 35% expert/advanced. Spectacular views of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountain range will always be around every turn for skiers and snowboarders alike. $200 million have been invested into the destination including a new pedestrian village surrounding the Heavenly Gondola. The new Heavenly Village offers skiers and riders 40 new shopping options, 14 new restaurants, 9 art galleries and 4 new non-ski activities, including laser tag, ice-skating (seasonal), and an eight-plex movie theatre.

Only a 15-minute drive west of Gardnerville on SR-88 is Hope Valley. You can pick up a picnic lunch at Woodfords Station and head out to Picketts Junction (intersection of SR-88 and SR-89). You will find a small parking lot on the south side of the intersection. This lot is the start of the dirt road to Burnside Lake. During winter you can park here and take a short hike to a wonderful sledding and tubing hill. The road is also a great snowshoe and cross-country ski area. There is a seasonal Yurt with snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals available.

This is the closest major cross country area to South Lake Tahoe, 12 miles from the Stateline Casinos on the Nevada side of the lake.
